How to import the file

QuickBooks Desktop

  1. 1Go to File > Utilities > Import > Web Connect Files.
  2. 2Select the .qbo file you downloaded and click Open.
  3. 3Choose "Use an existing account", pick your bank or card account, then review the transactions in the Bank Feeds center.

QuickBooks Online

  1. 1Go to Transactions > Bank transactions, open the Link account menu and choose Upload from file.
  2. 2Drag in the .qbo file, then choose which QuickBooks account the transactions belong to.
  3. 3Click Continue, then categorise or match the transactions under For review.

What the .qbo file looks like

A .qbo file is plain text in the OFX format that QuickBooks reads. The header and bank ID come first, then one block per transaction with its own ID, so QuickBooks can skip anything it has already imported.

Questions

How do I convert a CSV file to QBO?

Drop your bank's CSV export above. We detect the date, description and amount columns (or separate debit and credit columns) and the date format. Check the preview, pick bank account or credit card, then download the .qbo file and import it in QuickBooks.

Is this CSV to QBO converter really free?

Yes. CSV, OFX, QFX, QIF and QBO conversions are free. They run entirely in your browser, so they cost us nothing to run. Only PDF bank statement conversion, which needs OCR, will be a paid feature.

Is my bank data uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and converted by JavaScript in this page. Nothing is sent to our servers, and you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.

Why does QuickBooks say my bank is not supported?

QuickBooks checks the bank ID (INTU.BID) inside a .qbo file against its list of Web Connect banks. We use a generic ID that QuickBooks accepts for any bank; it may label the account with a different bank's name, which does not affect your transactions. If you know your bank's own ID, choose Custom and enter it.

Will importing the same transactions twice create duplicates?

Every transaction gets a unique ID (FITID) built from its date, amount and description. Converting the same CSV again gives the same IDs, so QuickBooks recognises transactions it has already imported and skips them.

My credit card CSV shows purchases as positive numbers. What do I do?

Turn on "Invert signs". In a .qbo file, purchases must be negative and payments positive. Many card issuers export the opposite, and the preview shows you which way round your file is.
