How to import the file

QuickBooks Desktop

  1. 1Go to File > Utilities > Import > Web Connect Files.
  2. 2Select the .qbo file you downloaded and click Open.
  3. 3Choose "Use an existing account", pick your bank or card account, then review the transactions in the Bank Feeds center.

QuickBooks Online

  1. 1Go to Transactions > Bank transactions, open the Link account menu and choose Upload from file.
  2. 2Drag in the .qbo file, then choose which QuickBooks account the transactions belong to.
  3. 3Click Continue, then categorise or match the transactions under For review.

What the .qbo file looks like

A .qbo file is plain text in the OFX format that QuickBooks reads. The header and bank ID come first, then one block per transaction with its own ID, so QuickBooks can skip anything it has already imported.

Questions

Why won't QuickBooks open my QFX file?

QuickBooks imports .qbo files only. QFX is the Quicken version of the same OFX format, so the transactions are compatible, but QuickBooks needs the file in its own packaging with a QuickBooks bank ID.

Will I lose any data converting QFX to QBO?

No. Dates, amounts, payee names, memos, check numbers and the bank's transaction IDs are all carried over. The account type (bank or credit card) is detected from the file.

Can I convert a credit card QFX?

Yes. Credit card statements stay credit card statements in the .qbo file, so QuickBooks links them to a credit card account.

Is it safe to convert my QFX file online?

The conversion happens inside your browser. Your QFX file is never uploaded to a server.
