Questions

What is an IIF file?

IIF (Intuit Interchange Format) is a tab-separated text format that QuickBooks Desktop imports directly into the register, without bank matching. It is useful for old transactions or accounts your bank does not offer as Web Connect.

Should I use IIF or QBO?

Use QBO when you can: it goes through the bank feed, where you review and match each transaction, and it works in QuickBooks Online. Use IIF for QuickBooks Desktop when you want transactions written straight to the register with a fixed offset account.

Does the account name have to match QuickBooks?

Yes. Type the bank or credit card account name exactly as it appears in your QuickBooks chart of accounts. Otherwise QuickBooks creates a new account with that name.

Which account do the other sides of the entries go to?

Money out goes to "Uncategorized Expenses" and money in goes to "Uncategorized Income" by default. You can change both names, then recategorise in QuickBooks.

Can QuickBooks Online import IIF files?

No. IIF is QuickBooks Desktop only. For QuickBooks Online use the CSV to QBO converter.

Should I back up before importing an IIF file?

Yes. IIF imports cannot be undone in one step, so make a backup of your company file first.
